For now, the last Carnibored blogpost will end with the Irish Root Beer from BJ's Restuarant and Brewery. Unfortunately, there is no picture but rest assured it's a PYT. Home brewed root beer, butterscotch schnapps, Bailey's cream, and Jameson Irish Whiskey. wow. Basically tastes like a chocolate root beer float with a hint of whiskey. wow. I class this as a meal in of itself because it's a bit heavy and could be drank as a dessert. I use this as a meal to spotlight the lengths that we go to enjoy the act of eating and drinking. I'm not a lush by any means as my social drinking has been severely moderated in recent years. Which is a good thing. But this drink here is good stuff.

Well, it's been more than a month and this Delorean seems to be out of Plutonium. I've kind of slacked off on the blog though my intake the past week or so has been about this same, if not a little bit better than usual. In part because we resolved to try to eat and home more. Overall, this has been an interesting experiment and certainly not a failure in the sense that it certainly has kept my intake and my health on my mind. The hurdle as always is not knowing, but doing.

It's odd to think I've been busy that past month in some form or another. Time seems to have warped a bit recently and I'm not sure how to feel about it. Is the time change a good excuse? I dunno.

This ebb and flow thing of being 30 is certainly striking. Not in the sense of the number or of feeling old but rather being older and dealing with the things that go along with that. And yes, achey bones, big gut, and resposiblity make one older. I'm sure there is some nifty web widget that can tell you how "old" you are because of your lifestyle and whatever passes for pseudo-pseudo science these days.

I was reading an issue of Alternative Press the other day with AFI on the cover and was struck by how old I feel. Never been a huge fan, I like their song on Madden 06 and Davey Havok's side band, Blaqk Audio (kind of 80's dance-goth-synth stuff) but was never interested because I wasn't "cool" enough to like them and now they are cleaned up and spiffy looking (posing for clothes ads) and this doesn't bother me. They talk about how they don't fit any longer in the old punk genre (cool kids are tearing are probably tearing AFI patches off their Gap Denim jackets right about now) and are looking to grow.

The younger me would have pissed at this change and made fun of them but I get it. I get it they way I get Hum's "Stars" and the lady from Private Practice make me think it would be cool to drive a CTS for a second. We get along the way we know how. Hum probably made more money off this commercial than they did with any of their albums. And the songs still rocks, the kick drum/drum fill that starts the first chorus is what made me realize I would never be a drummer, and that's a good thing. It's a beautiful moment and I hold that in my memory bank of things that make my heart flutter.

Other moments:

Carol and I seeing the trailer for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre years ago and left with a moment like that. Not because it was a good movie, in fact it was kind of a piece of shit but because of the trailer. This Mortal Coil's cover of Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren," possibly one of the most beautiful songs to ever written was used and it made the trailer.

Again, us seeing the trailer for Adaptation with Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure" backing the quick cuts of Cage, Streep, Cooper and Bryan Cox. The kind of trailer that makes you want to run out and make something of your life, live your dreams, be remembered. I enjoyed the movie but not as much as the trailer.

more recently, the long trailer for Terminator: Salvation set to Nine Inch Nails' "the day the world went away" with Christian Bale screaming, "If we stay the course, we are dead! WE ARE ALL DEAD!" wow. The film was flawed but it isn't often when you get to see a star being born and that star is Sam Worthington.

Seeing Mogwai open a show with "Sine Wave" and a sample of MLK's "I have a dream" speech at La Zona Rosa. It was a defining moment for sure. I remember thinking, "these are the sounds that will welcome me into the afterlife." Music has not sounded the same since.

Likewise, for seeing Pearl Jam at the Verizon with Carol. A huge crowd drunk, in tears singing along to Black and it meaning so many different things to so many different people but nevertheless uniting everyone for a moment.

Riding a coach from Galway to Donegal, Ireland with Carol. Staring at the countryside, the small roads, small cars, the livestock, U2 playing on my iPod. A moment that wasn't so planned or as cliche as it might sound. My longstanding U2 issue aside (subject of an upcoming blog) it endeared them to me.

This has got me thinking, more for another blogpost.

so, I don't know, how do I wrap up this blog? Living in the moment always sounds nice but its an impractical and flawed philosophy, but maybe remembering the moment works. You can never recreate these things or plan them and decide how they will impact you, they just do. I can remember the moment, how I feel when I look at these pictures of food or what i was thinking when I ate these meals. And though the result of this will be flawed and will never live up to it's trailer as least I know what it felt like. At least I know that I don't have an excuse for treating my body like a waste dump. Maybe i should get out and start moving more, should go out and throw a to football to myself like I did my in room when was a kid, set up the plastic trashcans in the front yard and tackle them, i don't know.

I felt a heavy sadness when I watched Lions for Lambs recently. Aside from a sterling acting showcase from Redford, Cruis, and Streep it's subject matter moved me. Watching Derrick Luke and Michael Pena live and die by their beliefs and hope is pretty inspiring. Not to join the army but live a life of purpose.

I hope one day, to think the same of myself.

As those of you have seen, the food blog is remaining consistent in it's gruesomeness. I might have one "light" meal and then it's back on to Bloat Town. In passing conversations that I have had with a few of you, we have discussed the possibility of multiple food blogs. Meaning that someone of you would start your own.

This is a great idea because many of you eat pretty darn healthy and I think that would be inspiring to those of us who don't (or the few of us, or just me). So why not, throw em up there. After all a blog is free and most folks have a camera phone or a least a digital camera.

I know James had an awesome name for his and I hope he puts it up. Why not ?

So this coming sunday, we will be heading up to boulder, colorado for a week. Pretty excited about the trip and I hope to get a bit more of glimpse of good ol' america. To date, I have had the privilege of visiting, in some form or another: New Mexico, Arizona, California, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, New York, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

Interesting to see how being in the city recently, "rated the '#1 Sports Town in America' by Outside Magazine" will affect me. In the very least, it'll be a good chance to see what it's like in a town where walking and biking are normall modes of transit as well as forms of excercise.

So I'll be taking Carnibored on the road to see how my eating for the week will be effected. I'll try to be better about updating. My photo updates the past couple of days has been weak, so i'll try to be more on.

No, this is not an aerial view of my toilet. This was my marvelous Orange Chicken, Broccoli, Fried Rice, Egg roll and Siracha sauce.

Full House rules. It's down the street next to the ghost of Gatti Land. You can call in an order for take out, they tell you that it'll be ready in 10 minutes and you can show up in 2 minutes and it will be ready. This would be a bad thing if the food wasn't good but on the contrary, it is very very good and the staff is very nice.

For a while they had a waving cat on their counter. One day the little guy was gone and we asked his whereabouts, the staff said that he had been stolen. suck.

Thinking about this, I just did a search for a picture and explanation of the cute little things.

It is called Maneki Neko (wikipedia, yeah!) and is a lucky beckoning cat. One paw attracts customers, the other attracts money. neat. I need to buy one. So, thinking back that's pretty shitty that someone would steal one. Christmas present, Full house!

I always see those commercials for weightloss pills, regimens, and miracle shit and all of them, everyone single one has a disclaimer at the bottom that in order for said snake oil to work that you must have a balanced diet and exercise. what the...?

That's like putting up a say that says: FREE MONEY (all you have to do is work for it).

Why the hell would I want to spend my money on junk that doesn't work, when I could just eat better and exercise for free. Ah ha! Not even that is free. It requires time and discipline and setting aside all my BS and to just focus. That's hard work. But it is work that bears fruit (low carb and aspartame free) you say. And you would speaking the truth. I concur with your argument good sir (or ma'am).

But the reality is that eating good and exercise is an inherent response to living in the modern world. Eating good and exercising is not a necessity to living. To living healthy? Yes. To living longer? Yes. But not to simply living.

Taking "good" care of yourself is a reaction to fear. A fear that you will die young and ugly. A fear that you will not like what you see in the mirror. A fear that you will not get to see your kids grow up. A fear that you won't fit into your favorite t-shirt. A fear that you will never find a mate or that you won't keep the one you have. A fear that you health will become a burden to those you love.

Take note, I'm not knocking healthy living. In fact, I'm praising its merit. It takes hard work and discipline. But doesn't everything good? I'm lucky enough to know quite a few people who live pretty healthy, eat pretty healthy and exercise. I do not envy them but rather am inspired by their dedication. But know this, it is not a necessity, it is will. Willpower is a tough thing. Hard to stop, hard to start.

I'm remember being a scrawny kid and not only taking for granted my relative health but also in fact feeling insecure and wishing I was bigger, stronger, and better looking. Maybe that's one of those things people can give up on. No one ever says I wish I was healthier that him or her. I thought, I wish people would look at me the way they look at him or her. Funny huh?

That is called false motivation and it can be given up on. Once I realized that there was a limit to how fast I could run, or how tall I would get or that I would forever have a zit pop up like an eyeball in soup in the worst of times, maybe I gave up on the other stuff too.

Wow, reading that line back sound real sad. Like Maury Povich sad. I need a hug, Maury! Pull up the sleeves on your v-neck.

Those youthful days of thinking it would be nice to be big and strong have waned? Who the fuck what's to be BIG and STRONG? What happens to those dudes who spent more time in the weight room than in the library. A lot of them are fat, ugly dudes who looked a bit like guy that once buff. And the ones that are still buff, or the ones that got buff later on in life (after getting picked on or after not getting girls)?

Yeah, not interested in that either. It's required now that if you are buff (and I mean buff - with bulging muscles and a six pack. Not 115lbs and so skinny that all you can see are tiny muscles and veins. Legs like Popsicle sticks has the bottom of a bathroom trashcan.) that you wear a very tight t-shirt with a silkscreen of Skull/Eagle/Guitar/Dragon emblazoned on the front, a haircut befitting "Hollywood" in Top Gun and an ear ring. No, that doesn't appeal to my ideal version of myself.

Just want to run again and sweat and laugh. Well, I still laugh (always) and still sweat (not for best reasons). And I want to be alive for my Carol and my cats and my dog. And yeah, I want to like what I see in the mirror.

Get this the other day I was craving a turkey burger and went to HEB to stock up. And then I spot the old Meal Deal coupon. Get this, you buy an eight pack of regular beef patties (fully cooked! whoo hoo!) and you get (1) pack of hamburger buns, (1) package of ranch dip, (1) bag of HEB tortilla chips, (1) 2 liter of HEB cola, and (1) pack of Kraft deli sliced swiss. all that for the price of an 8 pack of patties and this was stuff I would have bought anyway.

on the conspiracy tip, I'm pretty sure that the Meal Deal Coupon is a way a getting rid of things that are about to turn. It took me a while to find a pack of buns that didn't expire the following day. hmm...

Ah Sunday, tell me this doesn't rock. Gross looking, you may say but how often do you really look at your food before you eat it. Especially tacos, we toss in our sauce and fold up it back up and FedEx to our stomach. Without some much as a quick inspections for toenail, pubis, or roach brain.

In that regard, this applies to most things, stare at something you want for a looong time and then you start to notice the cracks, the dings, the imperfections.

Stare at anything for too long and it becomes a whole lot less than ideal.

Today, I have to admit I'm a moron as I have held firm in the angered belief that Chili's does not serve chili. This is important because I rather enjoy chili (not if effects however) and the recent
"gloomy goose (to quote Sofia Vergara in Modern Family)" weather has got me thinking about a steaming bowl. Just the other day I was complaining about this to Carolyn whereby she informed me that Chili's does in fact serve chili. I refused to believe and went on to accuse Wendy's of offering the only fast food chili in town.

I went on record as complaining to a coworker about this same thing.

And once again today, with The Schneid echoing Carol in saying that Chili's did IN FACT serve chili. Again I refused to believe. He offered this, "Look at the menu."

I got home and looked at the menu and much to my great sadness discovered that Chili's in fact, serves Chili. This is how wars get started folks.

Sad you ask? Yes. All the years of eating at Chili's, putting up with the Old Timer (called that because it tastes like it was made two days ago and then left atop a counter and then served to me) and pushing my stomach to the brink with the Triple Dipper (erroneously called The Triple Dipple or worse, The Triple Dimple by me with mush mouth) and the chili was right in front of my eyes.

That said. I should have ordered the chili tonight but didn't.

Two Tuna Fish sandwiches on white. Hot Cheeto Puffs. Not just Cheetos, not just Hot, but also puffy. A bit like my lower intestine.

By the by, two cans of Tuna for three people doesn't work. You will need a lot of extra Miracle Whip to fill that lunch out. Another though, don't commit a crime after eating this lunch.

Welcome to Carnibored. A photo blog.

I was once 4' 11" and 80 lbs. Then I was 5' 8"-ish and 185lbs. waist 32 . Now 5' 8"-ish and 239lbs. Waist 36-ish. If there was a 37 x 30, that would be great. The last time I got a physical the doctor told me I was medically obese. I wanted to ask him if he could diagnose me as medically lazy as well but I was too...anyway. Apparently, my "ideal" weight is 175 lbs or close. Yeah, that's pretty stupid. I saw a picture not too long ago and about 165 lbs. I looked like a Debra Winger Bobble head.

Medically ideal? Maybe if I wanted to get crushed to death by a bag of cat litter or crawl under a fence crossing enemy lines (my head would get stuck. That has always been huge). I'm pretty sure 190 to 195 lbs would suffice. Small enough not to get dirty looks at China Harbor Buffet but large enough to shove a drunk idiot at a concert (being large occasionally has its perks but not often.) Most importantly, to squeeze into the 30 seconds to mars T-shirt that I bought 2 years ago. Still crisp and black, hanging in the closest. Size Large. yes, 30 seconds to mars. (stands up: "yes, I like them. A lot. Yes, I am a thirty year old man and not a thirteen year old girl. piss off! quietly sits down.)

Though, I can say the day that I accepted that I wore XL and a size 36 waist was quite a revelation, akin to Doc Brown inventing Mr. Fusion, I am decidedly hostile about my current health. Though JT already brought sexy back, I'd like to finish a very distant second.

My confession is that I love eating. I love food. I wish I could say its just emotional eating. But that's bullshit. Everything is emotional. We are humans, not John Malkovich in Making Mr. Right. I do most things in moderation or not at all. In general, I am a moderate, lukewarm type of guy (not moderate in the political sense. I have no idea what the even means.) I drink in moderation. I exercise in extreme moderation. Play video games in moderation. I live in moderation. A bit of a boring pull really.

But I don't eat in moderation. Sheeett no! I loves my food.

So for my sake and more for entertainments as well, I have decided to open up a photo blog chronicling my eating habits which will last until I lose weight or get lazier. Which ever comes first. I think maybe hindsight of looking back on my meals will activate the Clapper and turn the lights on.

These days we are Pre-everything and can't do too much about it. And fatalist folks like myself, really don't feel compelled to do much about it. But I guess the one thing a I can do is watch what I shove down my face and just maybe I'll wake the hell up and get a bit healthier. For my lady. For my future kids. For my cats and dog. For my college football career ( hey, we still have four years of eligibility! "Hey 'Dillos! Let's get it on!").

And finally, for me. The one the uncomfortably bends over to tie his shoes every morning. The one who runs out of breath walking up more than 3 stairs. The one who burps and tastes fajita from three days ago. The one who yearns to sprint 400 meters in 54 seconds like the old days (a shitty time that would get you whupped) but still feel alive when I puked from exhaustion, not from too many wings.

This won't be a health blog. So don't expect tips or advice or catharsis. Or even for the pics to get less greasy, gross or redundant. Just maybe, if you are anything like me, you'll know that you are not alone and that every day is a battle.
